Augmented reality video – Thomas de Gilder

Today we finally finished the video for Banknote Bingo. The video shows how the applications would work when it makes use of augmented reality. Cashmyra made the illustrations and I mainly used Adobe after effects to make them into animations. Tomorrow is the day we are going to present the concept and video so I am very curious about the feedback we will get from Fraser.

Research – The best way to explain a game (Thomas de Gilder)

What is the best way to explain a game?
After getting feedback from Fraser and Bob we found out we had to simplify the augmented reality video we made. The important thing is how are we going to explain the game while keeping it simple. This I why I did research on the best way to explain a game.

Before I just started doing research I had to think of the right places to search for the answer. I decided I was going to find out how the manuals where build up of some board games I have at home.

Weerwolven
The first game I researched is “Weerwolven”. The manual starts of with a story. The story actually already tells how the game works. After this introduction they tell in 2 sentences what the goal of the game is.

–           The villagers have to expose the werewolves.
–           The werewolves have to eliminate the villagers.

These are the key points or unique selling point of the game. We will be able to use this in our own explanation. We will have to find out what is the single most important thing of the format.

De Mol
This game was derived from the well-known television show “Wie is de Mol”. The manual start off differently than “Weerwolven”. It starts by telling the short version of the game. It already goes very much into detail. This is probably because the game itself is much more complicated than the game I discussed earlier.

Reddit
I decided to look up some articles and literature about this topic. It was quite hard to find some reliable sources but I did found something interesting. I came across a forum where people where discussing about board games and how to explain them. A person made a blog about the best way to explain a game. He claims to be a game teacher in a board game café. Of course this isn’t a very reliable source but I did notice a lot of similarities with the games I already discussed.

“As soon as you’ve set the tone with the game’s theme, players should know what they’re shooting for. When players know what their goals are, everything else falls into place.” (Monopolatte, 2015)

This is exactly how the game manuals where build up. This could work really well for our concept. We have to let the target group know what the main goal or unique selling point of the game is and explain the rest afterwards. Then everything falls into place.

Evaluating the moving storyboard – Thomas de Gilder

Fraser

Last week we had another meeting Fraser. We got the change to get some feedback on the prototype we made. We had a couple of things we wanted to know about the current prototype:

– What does he think about the augmented reality application?
– Is the information we are giving detailed enough or too detailed?
– Is the message clear enough?

After presenting the moving storyboard to Fraser he was really enthusiastic about it. He liked the way we used the augmented reality and he thought it was original. Of course there where also a few things we had to change. He thought it was too much information about the game show itself. It should have been more focused on the unique selling points of Banknote Bingo. He was for example talking about the final round where the contestant is going to choose between the containers. Fraser said this was too detailed. Also when the video is going into detail too much it will get confusing for people who don’t know anything about it.

Evaluating with other people
After the feedback from Fraser I wanted to get some reactions from people that don’t know anything about the show. I was wondering if they would understand it and where things where going wrong. I asked a few friends to come over and have an open-minded vision on it. I did choose friends that know something about graphic design so they could also give feedback on that part.

I wanted to think trough what I was going to say to them before I showed them the video. It is important that they have an open-minded look at the video. I decided that I would tell them that the video is for a new television format. I also told them how we where going to use augmented reality in this concept.

After showing them I was just letting them do the talking and I would ask questions afterwards. The thing I heard the most was that the video contain quite some information and therefore made it unclear. Especially the part with the decimal point. This isn’t a coincidence because Fraser also talked about that.

They thought the animations and illustrations could be a bit more exciting but that also because it is just a prototype.

Overall they thought it was a good video and most important they where enthusiastic. That is exactly what we want to achieve with the target group. It is not that important for this evaluation but they did say they where going to watch the show if it would be on air. They would even go to the bank to get banknotes.

Conclusion
We have to make some changes. The order of the video probably has to change completely so we need to make a new storyboard and start making the video afterwards. They key is to make the broadcaster enthusiastic about the format by showing them what the unique selling point of the show is.

Week 4

This week Fraser came over to give feedback on the concepts. We came up with. We where presenting the 3 different concepts we talked about in our earlier blog. I had the change to do the presentation and make concepts as clear as possible. Cashmyra made some useful moodboards that we where also showing during the presentation.

I think the presentation went quite well. He was enthusiastic about the concepts and after discussing about it we where able to make some decisions.

These where the most important notes we made:
– We just have to find that trigger. We can choose all 3 concepts.
– Giving away the money. I would skip this. It is about the greed.
– The usp is. Everybody has banknotes.
